There’s a magical moment that happens at this time of year, yet many of us miss it. As we cling to our pillows, the birds outside begin their symphonic awakening before sunrise. As the first light of day breaks, the air fills with bird song. The early morning soundscape reveals the distinct personalities of various bird species, each contributing its unique notes and sounds.
Best time for the dawn chorus is usually about 30–45 minutes before sunrise, and it peaks right at sunrise.
In spring and early summer, it's at its most beautiful and intense.
Birds sing more at dawn because it's cooler, calmer, and their voices travel farther.

At the end of March I travelled to West Cork for an artist residency in Ballydehob, a collaboration between The Duncairn Arts Centre and Levis Pub. My accommodation was on top of Mount Kid surrounded by open skies, grazing cows, and a chorus of birds. My mornings were filled with the most extraordinary dawn chorus I’ve ever heard—a soundscape of nature waking up. Flocks of Siskins, Goldfinches, Chaffinches, Starlings, Blue Tits, Great Tits, Wrens, Willow Warblers, and Robins filled the air with their layered, intricate songs. Every morning I sat out on the balcony and enjoyed the bird song. There was a special, rare stillness in those moments before daybreak—sitting quietly as the first birds stirred, wrapped in my blanket and the sound of a world waking up.
